Presbyterian Church, USA, General Assembly Votes to Remove Ordination Block for LGBT

San Jose, CA - June 28, 2008

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, USA, meeting in San Jose, CA, voted 54% to 46% to remove the ban on non-celibate gays and lesbians from serving in ministry. The vote must be approved by a majority of the 173 regional Presbyteries of the church over the next year. The General Assembly also allowed for ordination bodies to over rule the current celibacy requirement and ordain lesbians or gay men in committed relationships. While opening the ministry wider for LGBT people, the GA also voted to maintain the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.
