It is with mixed emotions that I have resigned as
the National Coordinator of AWAB, effective January 1, 2004. My
reasons are primarily personal, but I also feel that now is a good
time for AWAB to develop new leadership as it transitions into the
next phase of its organizational life. Looking back, I celebrate
with you the ten years of AWAB’s ministry within Baptist circles. We
have increased our membership to more than 50 congregations, plus
many organizations and individual members. We have solidified our
presence within the ABCUSA and begun to strengthen our affiliations
with the Alliance of Baptists and the Baptist Peace Fellowship of
North America. We have celebrated our reunion with American Baptists
Concerned, the “parent” organization of AWAB, and are now working as
one organization to do ministry with churches and with individuals.
Together we have moved from a loose network of a handful of
congregations to an organization which is well-respected by many
within denominational and ecumenical circles. We have changed lives
and educated thousands. We have held firm to what we believe God has
called us to do despite incredible opposition. Looking ahead, I am
also excited about AWAB’s future. While I am certain that it is time
for me to move on to other things, I am sad that I will not be a
part of that future. Although I will not be with you for the next
phase of AWAB’s growth, I am confident that God is leading AWAB into
new and diverse ministries. There are many talented people within
the AWAB family and I have no doubt that the important work of AWAB
will continue.
Please continue to pray with me for the AWAB Council
especially during this time of transition. Expanding the welcome and
affirmation for lgbt people among Baptists will continue to be my
deepest passion, and I have no doubt that our paths will cross in
the years to come. I treasure the work that we have shared and the
relationships which we have formed during the ten years that I have
been involved in the leadership of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists. I
wish to thank each of you for your prayers, your support, and your
commitment to AWAB’s mission. I have enjoyed working with you and
for you. You will always be in my prayers.
In Christ’s service,
Brenda J. Moulton
