The Judson
Society is named in honor of Adoniram and Ann Hasseltine Judson, the first
missionaries sent from North America. He graduated from Andover Theological
Seminary in 1810.
Just as AWAB is
working to change hearts, minds, and spirits, the Judsons worked to do the
same.
The mission and
work of the Judsons led to the formation in 1814 of the first Baptist
association in America (the General Convention of the Baptist Denomination
in the United States for Foreign Missions - commonly called the Triennial
Convention). The Judsons inspired many Americans to become or support
missionaries. Adoniram translated the Bible into Burmese.
When the
Judsons began their mission in Burma, Adoniram set a goal of translating the
Bible and founding a church of 100 members before his death. When he died,
he left the bible, 100 churches, and over 8,000 believers. In large part due
to the influence of Ann and Adoniram, Burma (Myanmar) has the third largest
number of Baptists worldwide, behind the United States and India.
