H. Darrell Lance
The
InSpiriter Editor
Darrell is a native Hoosier, baptized and ultimately ordained at the First Baptist Church of Indianapolis. During
his days at Wabash College, he was president of the Indiana Baptist Student Movement and served on the Student
Staff at Green Lake. After seminary at Colgate Rochester Divinity School and doctoral work at Harvard University,
Darrell returned in 1965 to teach at Colgate Rochester where he served as professor of Old Testament interpretation
until his retirement 28 years later. For seven years he spent summers as associate director of the Hebrew Union
College—Harvard Semitic Museum excavations at the site of biblical Gezer in Israel. Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship
for 1973-74, he spent the year as Annual Professor at the Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem,
studying materials from the Gezer excavations.
Darrell is an active member of Lake Avenue Baptist Church in Rochester, New York (W&A). He is particularly
interested in the exciting work being done at the intersection of Christian faith and the experience of gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgendered persons and writes and speaks on these topics. In his spare time, he sings with the
Rochester Gay Men's Chorus and is a semi-professional actor, appearing on stage and in TV commercials and industrial
and feature films. He serves on the AWAB Council as editor of The InSpiriter. |
