Reflection on AWAB at ABC/USA Biennial Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Dear Friends, As fly home from the ABC Biennial I am still in awe of the events that have unfolded over the last few days.  Having been in the belly of the SBC beast just a few short weeks ago I should have known that we were in a radical shift in the Baptist world as it relates to the LGBTQ community, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened at the Biennial and the long-term implications that this has for us as the historic Baptist core.

Jennifer Knapp and Other Highlight of AWAB National Gathering and BPFNA Peace Camp

As a national body AWAB holds a general meeting at least once every two years.  In the past we have met during the American Baptist Biennial.  This year, our first official year of meeting apart from the ABC, we met during the Baptist Peace Fellowship at North America’s summer gathering, or “peace camp.”  What a joy it was to be surrounded by so many Baptist friends, colleagues, and supporters!

Statement for SBC Press Conference and Action

Over the last twenty years I have watched as Baptist churches of all stripes have been shunned, chastised, and dis-fellowshipped because they dare to believe that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are equal in the eyes of God.   These churches and communities have gone so far as to say that LGBT people should have the same rights and responsibilities, the same freedoms, and the same opportunities as the heterosexual community.  Read more HTML | PDF

Who We Are

The Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists (AWAB) is an organization of churches willing to go on record as welcoming and affirming all persons without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity, and who have joined together to advocate for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons within Baptist communities of faith. We are also made up of group and individual Friends of AWAB who seek to join with us in broadening the welcome to all. Our unique makeup helps make AWAB The National Voice for LGBT Baptists.

Vision Statement of the Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists

We envision that the day may speedily come within Baptist Churches when no one shall feel excluded from God's love in Jesus Christ because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.
