WASHINGTON (ABP) – Three
Baptist groups released a joint statement Oct. 11
calling for action to stop a series of shootings and
violent attacks targeting transgender victims in
Washington, D.C.

Reflection on AWAB at
ABC/USA Biennial Meeting
in San Juan, Puerto Rico |
|
|
| |
|
Dear Friends, As fly
home from the ABC Biennial I am still in awe of the
events that have unfolded over the last few days.
Having been in the belly of the SBC beast just a few
short weeks ago I should have known that we were in
a radical shift in the Baptist world as it relates
to the LGBTQ community, but nothing could have
prepared me for what happened at the Biennial and
the long-term implications that this has for us as
the historic Baptist core.

As a national body AWAB
holds a general meeting at least once every two
years. In the past we have met during the American
Baptist Biennial. This year, our first official
year of meeting apart from the ABC, we met during
the Baptist Peace Fellowship at North America’s
summer gathering, or “peace camp.” What a joy it
was to be surrounded by so many Baptist friends,
colleagues, and supporters!

AWAB
& LGBT Coalition Have Historic Meeting with SBC
President |
|
|
| |
 |
A
coalition of religious and secular organizations
advocating to end the harm caused to gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgender youth by religion-based bigotry
met Wednesday in a historic meeting with the president
of the Southern Baptist Convention in Phoenix, Ariz. It
was the first time any LGBT advocacy organization, much
less five different groups, has ever sat down with the
head of the Southern Baptist Convention..

Statement for SBC
Press Conference and
Action |
|
|
| |
|
Over the last twenty
years I have watched as Baptist churches of all
stripes have been shunned, chastised, and dis-fellowshipped
because they dare to believe that lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender people are equal in the
eyes of God. These churches and communities have
gone so far as to say that LGBT people should have
the same rights and responsibilities, the same
freedoms, and the same opportunities as the
heterosexual community.
